The Importance of Military Security to Our National Security

Military security has always been an integral part of national security. During the Cold War, the majority of threats that policymakers and analysts saw as risks to national security were military threats (Snow, 2014, p. 25). Nonmilitary elements were added to national security policy during this period, and today nonmilitary, semi military, and military elements all remain important. The September 11th attacks saw an increased focus on national security. Concerns of terrorism led to the Department of Defense working more closely with federal, state, and local agencies (Bowman, 2003). The military has always relied on civilian control, yet there are some characteristics that complicate the relationship between military and civilian†¦show more content†¦The War Powers Resolution is one of the many types of checks and balances the federal government implements to ensure that one branch of the government does not become too powerful. It requires the President to seek authorizat ion from Congress before sending military troops into combat. After 60 days, troops must be withdrawn unless Congress has officially declared war or an extension has been approved. If the President submits a request stating that â€Å"unavoidable military necessity respecting the safety of United States Armed Forces requires the continued used of such armed forces in the course of bringing about a prompt removal of such forces†, he may have an additional 30 days to withdraw troops (Sarkesian, Williams, Cimbala, 2013, p. 216). The overall goal of the resolution is to have the President consult with Congress from the time troops are put into dangerous situations until the time they are removed. While Congress made a solid attempt to curtail the President’s power over the military and save our troops from being put in danger’s way, presidents have mostly ignored the War Powers Resolution. Presidents believe that their position as Commander-in-Chief allows them to send military troops into battle as they see fit. In 1991, President George H.W.
